Biography

Originally from a small town in North Carolina, Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews moved to Glen Cove, NY after having lived in Kentucky, Dallas, and New York City. A vocalist, acting coach, and speech coach, he also worked for many years in arts administration. He founded and served as Producing Artistic Director of a theatre company in Dallas and has been involved in the creation of several nonprofit organizations, including the Flora Macdonald Legacy Foundation.

Prior to his work as a coach, Gaitley worked as a professional actor and director for more than twenty years and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association (AFL-CIO), Screen Actors Guild, and the American Guild of Musical Artists.

A long-time advocate for the arts and community involvement, Gaitley often volunteers in preparing meals for North Shore Sheltering, is a member of the North Shore Historical Museum, and serves as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Glen Cove, where he teaches an adult spiritual study class titled “Invitation to Journey.” Gaitley also served on the Cultural Affairs Commission for the City of Dallas, currently serves on the Community Development Agency for the City of Glen Cove, and is an active member of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce.

Gaitley holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Business from Louisburg College (NC), a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature from Berea College (KY), and a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre from Southern Methodist University (TX). He has additional administrative training via San Francisco’s Support Center for Non-Profit Management, worked as a Research Associate at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in developing literacy training films for adults with reading disorders, and recently completed his certification as an ACE (American Council on Exercise) Certified Personal Trainer.

He lives with his husband of thirteen years, Jim Stevenson-Mathews, who has worked as Head Gardener on one of Long Island’s Gold Coast estates for more than thirty-five years. The two own a home in the Landing area of Glen Cove and are especially pleased to be near Morgan Park and to have the best neighbors in the world.
