Biography

Originally from a small town in North Carolina, Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews moved to Glen Cove, NY after having lived in Kentucky, Dallas, and New York City. A freelance communications professional and speech coach, Gaitley also worked for many years in arts administration and is a former Glen Cove City Councilman. He founded and served as Producing Artistic Director of a theatre company in Dallas and has been involved in the creation of several nonprofit organizations, including the Flora Macdonald Legacy Foundation.

 

Prior to his work as a coach, Gaitley worked as a professional actor and director for more than twenty years and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association (AFL-CIO) and the National Association of Arts Administrators.

 

A long-time advocate for the arts and community involvement, Gaitley is a Founding Member of NOSH, a program of the North Shore Soup Kitchen, is a board member of the North Shore Historical Museum, and serves as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Glen Cove. Gaitley also served on the Cultural Affairs Commission for the City of Dallas, is an active member of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce and the North Shore Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and serves on the city's Memorial Day Parade Committee.

 

Gaitley holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Business from Louisburg College (NC), a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature from Berea College (KY), and a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre from Southern Methodist University (TX). He has additional administrative training via San Francisco’s Support Center for Non-Profit Management, worked as a Research Associate at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in developing literacy training films for adults with reading disorders, and recently completed his certification as an ACE (American Council on Exercise) Certified Personal Trainer.

 

He lives with his husband of sixteen years, Jim Stevenson-Mathews, who has worked as Head Gardener on one of Long Island’s Gold Coast estates for more than thirty-five years. The two own a home in the Landing area of Glen Cove and are especially pleased to be near Morgan Park and to have the best neighbors in the world.

VOCALIST

From classical to Broadway, and sacred to folk, Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews has made a name for himself performing a diverse range of musical styles.  In addition to his solo work, he often performs with pianist Jim Stevenson-Mathews in presenting their two-man show of traditional Scottish songs.
